AMADO GONZALEZ ORIGINAL POSTERS, 1965
Amado Gonzalez, a muralist, portrait and poster artist, was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in 1913. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1927, studied at the California School of Fine Arts under the disciples of Sigueiros, Rivera and Orozco. After the completion of his training, he immediately established himself as a muralist and portrait painter. His first one person show was at the San Francisco Museum of Art in 1935. Many awards and shows followed. He is a member of the Society of Western Artists and one of its former presidents. From 1934 to 1938 he worked throughout California for the WPA (Works Progress Administration) as a muralist. After the depression, he painted major murals for the San Francisco Commercial Club and the Bank of America. In the early 1960's he create a large series of Bank of America ads depicting scenes of California. These ads were published in both "Time" and "Fortune" and in the mid 1960's, the now defunct California Wine Advisory Board commissioned him to create posters and ads proclaiming the virtues of California wines. His ads happened at an important transition period for California wines. Before his ads, California wine was held in low esteem and California wine was considered generic "jug" wine. But things changed quickly in the California wine industry into the 1970's and Gonzalez's posters were very important in 'getting the word out" about California wine. His wine posters were printed in very limited quantity and after the demise of the Wine Advisory Board, many of the remaining posters were trashed. I was fortunate to find a small quantity of his original posters. These are being sold on a "first come first served" basis.
Gonzalez continues to paint portraits. Nearly all of the portraits of past chancellors of the University of California at San Francisco and hanging in that college, are his.
Amado Gonzalez is listed in the "Who Was Who In American Art, 1564 to 1975" and also in Edan Hughes book, "Artists in California, 1786 to 1940"
